The day Maximiliano received the postcard with the infamous equation, he knew his patience was finally paying off: he was finally getting, in a kind of long-delayed payment, the power of a century’s worth of work. He looked at the equation three times and understood: the colonel, knowing his life was being extinguished little by little, was giving him the key to an intimate work so that he could now see it with different eyes. Then he tossed the postcard in among a mess of books, and he set, with the greatest enthusiasm, to revising the theses of the Diatribe, until he realized that he found himself facing a work written in an intimate code. What had once seemed to be the colonel’s aspiration, his arrogant ambition, finally revealed itself to him in its true, softly giggling humility, written to the scale of man and not the stars, in a kind of long pilgrimage that was nothing but a simple confession of guilt. He smiled tenderly then, looking at the photograph of that now-old man, that old man in sunglasses and a sleeveless shirt, before deciding that it was finally time to go. Maximiliano, seeing that the equation was in itself a call to action, recovered his youth the instant that, like a bear after winter, he foresaw that he would be ready to exercise the power of his happiness.
