The book of Ruth begins with death, but by the end of chapter 2 we see obvious signs of new life. Not only did Ruth lose her husband, and Naomi her husband and two sons, but both women also lost the world as they knew it. When their loved ones died, so did their expectations for how their lives would proceed. Everything changed, and it wasn’t clear how things would look when the dust settled.
Both Ruth and Naomi had to grieve all that they had lost—a part of themselves—or risk being consumed by their pain. In order for new life to emerge from the ashes, we must be willing to go through a period when the ground of our heart remains fallow. We must bury the old dreams that can no longer come to pass in order for new ones to be planted and take root.
What has to die in your life so that you can live?
Death brings grief and grief brings pain. Birth brings new life, but it also brings pain. How are you using your pain? Are you creating something new or still grieving what could have been?
If things turned around for you overnight, what would your pain have taught you that you will never forget?
Write a letter about your darkest pain. Write about how it affected your life. Describe any regret or shame you carried.
Imagine yourself free from the feelings you wrote about. Healed from the pain that haunts you. What does that girl look like? How has she become better? What makes her smile?
You can be that girl. You are on the road to a better you. Just like Ruth, your willingness to open your heart means you’re on the verge of a breakthrough.
