Oh, reality, how you curse me.

Stepping out into the cool night air, I opened my com, turned it on and dialed the only number I could. It’s not like I have a whole lot of friends just lying around. Maybe that also says something about me, aside from the fact that I’m a home body. Just another reminder of how much my life sucks.

It rang twice before someone picked up.

“Hello?” Mom’s groggy voice came on the line.

“Mom! Mom, look, I know it’s late, but I need you to-”

“Hermie? Is that you?”

“Yes, but listen-”

“It’s so late,” she tittered worriedly, “Oh, sweetie, is something wrong? Are you alright?”

“I’m fine, Mom, but look-”

“No. No. You look, Hermie. I know this is hard for you, but I refuse to let you do this. Calling me at all hours for something you can’t deem an emergency? Oh! I just can’t... well, it’s…”

“Mom... but Mom...” She wasn’t listening.

“I didn’t want to have to do this, but you give me no choice. Now, I know this is going to be hard for you to understand, a big adjustment, and I know you know I love you dearly, you’re my baby, but I think it’s best if I have a little break from you for a while.”

“Mom?”

“I love Joe, honey, and I’m marrying him. There will be no more pants stealing, sour looks or sex jokes! And I won’t let you call me in the middle of the night with some hair-brained crazy scheme you’ve suddenly cooked up!!”

“Mom…? I’ve never schemed and I’m not scheming now, I…”

“Do I make myself clear?!! Ugh. I mean, the pants, I could let go, but really, honey, I…”

“Mom!” I shouted over her late night ranting, “Look, I just need a…”

“Oh,” she gasped in shock. “Hermie, don’t yell,” she called softly, and her voice quavered.

There was a scuffling sound and then I heard the com go in and out. “Look,” Joe’s gruff voice came on, “whatever it is, you’re a man, figure it out.”

“Joe!!” my mother’s scandalized voice rang out across my com link.

“I’m not calling to cause problems. I just need a…”

More shuffling and muffling.

“Believe me, baby doll, you’ll thank me for this later.”

“Oh, but… Joey!”

“Figure it out. Good bye, Kertt.” There was a click and then the line went dead.

Pulling my ear away, I stared down stupidly at my com. “I think my mother and her boyfriend just broke up with me,” I mumbled to myself. A light feminine chuckle came off from somewhere to my right. My head snapped in that direction and I found I wasn’t alone.

It wasn’t my precious who greeted me, but a stranger.

“Rough night?” the woman occupying the bench by the wall asked softly.

I glanced over at her, frowning, and sighed. Nodding a little, my shoulders slumped. “Something like that.”

She eyed me up and down and offered, “Need a lift?”

Sure, because there aren’t any female serial killers out there. No way. “Uhm, no. Thanks though.”

Bright blue eyes glittering, she gave me a sexy smile and stood. “Maybe we could go out for a bite to eat or something? Mmm.
