Chapter 30

Shortly after breakfast, Slavin took a call and stepped onto the back porch for privacy. Ten minutes later, he came in with the news that he needed to go to the mainland for a meeting. Apparently, someone claimed to have important information related to his case.

Before leaving, he showed Drenna where to find everything she needed—food, water, the first aid kit, and toiletries. He also gave her a burner phone that had numbers for him and Mathias stored in the contacts. He asked her to contact Mathias only in case of an emergency. He also asked her to not venture more than a few hundred yards from the cabin.

If nothing else, it was clear that she had earned Slavin’s trust. Not only was he leaving her alone at his uncle’s cabin, but he also had to know it would be easy for her to find the island’s main dock if she wanted to. While it was possible the whole thing could be an elaborate scheme to win her over, her instincts told her that both men were on the right side of whatever was going on.

They trusted her, and so far, she trusted them.

Slavin told Drenna he expected to be back that evening. If that wasn’t going to be possible, then he would update her by text.

Once he left, Drenna ate a light lunch of two ham sandwiches and assorted fruit. She and Gunner then went out onto the back porch to get some fresh air. Slavin had given Drenna an iPad to use in case she got bored. He cautioned her not to conduct any searches related to their work.

Around two o’clock, Drenna went inside and lay down on the couch. Gunner curled up on the rug a few feet away. As time went on, the dog seemed more and more comfortable in her presence. If Slavin accepted her, then that was good enough for him.

Drenna closed her eyes and was asleep within seconds. At some point thereafter, she was awakened by the chime of an incoming text. Lifting her head, she realized it was already dark outside.

“Geez, Drenna,” she muttered to herself.

Picking up the phone, she discovered a text from Slavin.

My meeting lasted longer than I thought it would. I’ll be back sometime tomorrow.

She wondered what the new lead was all about. Had Mathias been able to trace the phone number Ares was using? Had someone else shown up at Mikko Volanen’s bakery? If so, then there was no telling how long he might be gone. She wished he had given her more information, but she also understood why he hadn’t shared any details.

Realizing she was hungry, Drenna ate a simple dinner of chicken and rice. She then went into the living room and looked through several books that were stacked on top of an end table. She selected a mystery by Tami Hoag and headed for bed. Drenna wasn’t much of a reader, but this one pulled her in right away. She finished it around midnight then turned out the light and went to sleep.
