Grand Opening

The next two weeks were filled with hefty managerial loads and long hours of helping Spencer and Eddy prepare for the bakery’s grand opening. When not working, quick trips were taken to the river to surf, and Tahereh and Harry (and sometimes Delphiki) were met for drinks and chitchat.

All the while, I carried the weighty responsibility of Hamlet’s education, and together we’d made it nearly halfway through Magnum Vikus. He now knew dozens of runes and could follow me around the yard, reading them as I scratched them into trees. At night my eyes itched for sleep as I read well past my bedtime, determined to keep my knowledge one step ahead of his.

June 1 approached with still no leads into the crimes that had been committed. But no new crimes were committed either. Everything pointed to the promise of a successful grand opening and a busy summer. As the mountain snows melted and the river swelled, flocks of tourists descended upon the town and delicious scents filled the streets as the food trucks pronounced themselves OPEN! in multihued chalk.

Demelza Corn and Spencer found themselves in a fragile truce when Lieutenant Tennant informed them that Pim had a solid alibi for the night of Fox Burrow’s break-in. As well, Pete Moss and I were back to our old selves. So I’d seen him in the forest with a strange box. So what? I knew Pete. He was harmless. Bog bodies seldom committed crimes.

The morning of June 1 dawned bright and clear, with not a cloud in the sky. A perfect day for Witching Flour’s grand opening party. The whole town had been buzzing about it for the past two weeks, as had Spencer and Eddy, who rushed about everywhere with pink cheeks and checklists.

Curled on Freyja, I opened my eyes and stretched. “Skunk,” I said, flicking my tail at her where she laid upside down on the foot of the bed. “Skunk, wake up.”

“Yes, I’m single,” the Pom murmured, her eyelids fluttering in her sleep.

Beside me, Spencer woke up and ran a hand through her tangled hair. “Today’s the day,” she said, petting me.

“The day for what?” Eddy teased, entering the room with two steaming mugs of coffee.

Fennec and Hamlet looked up from their places on the bed next to Skunk. With love and treats, Fennec had overcome the “Incident of Scariness,” and now he rolled onto his back, his legs sticking straight into the air, exposing the ugly dog head tattoo for pets. Leaning over me and covering my face with a sheet of blond hair, Spencer obliged.

Sinking to the edge of the bed, Eddy handed Spencer her coffee before setting his on the bedside table with a loud thump.

“Yes, you can court me!” Skunk bellowed, shooting awake with wild eyes and a string of drool rappelling from her mouth to the quilt.

All of us looked at her, our brows raised.

Her eyes clearing, she let out a howl of lament. “He was an Australian shepherd, Bijou,” she said, her fur deflating.
