The vampire approached Derek with a gait that reminded him of someone on roller skates. Derek wasn’t impressed.

“Back for more?” he asked.

The abomination stared back, so white-faced it looked like a moon had descended to street level.

“She’s not here,” Derek said. “You can tell that to whoever sent you. I doubt if you’ll find her again, so you might as well target someone else. I’d recommend that you take Riley off your fetish list, or you’ll have a pack of Weres to deal with each time you resurface.”

The damn thing finally spoke, though its fangs made the words difficult to understand. “You know nothing, wolf.”

“No? Then why don’t you enlighten me?”

“She is wanted.”

“By whom?” Derek asked.

“Someone far more powerful than you.”

“I can think of only one someone that would fit that description. Could that vampire be your Prime?”

“You know nothing,” the vamp repeated.

“Let’s not go backward, okay? I’m trying to understand why Riley is so special.”

“Why is she special to you?” the pasty-faced bloodsucker countered.

“Part of what makes her special to me is the fact that all of you want her so badly. I’m trying to figure out the reason for that.”

“I can smell her on you, wolf, which means that she is special to you for other reasons as well.”

“Maybe you’re right,” Derek admitted. “But is your interest centered on any feelings I might have for her? Because that would make this whole stalking nonsense about me.”

“You merely make things more difficult.”

It was evident that this was a well-spoken vampire he faced. In his experience, only the ancients of the species possessed the ability to make real conversation of any kind...and Christ, how many of them could there be?

“You can go now,” Derek said. “Trot back to whomever you report to and tell them you failed to reach your prey.”

“Humans are vulnerable,” the vampire said. “Choose your friends wisely, wolf, or some of them won’t survive for much longer.”

Derek didn’t like the sound of that threat. He raised the gun, aimed and fired...but there was only empty space where the vampire had stood.

He lowered the gun and swore loudly, wishing he had a car.
