Jake

From my vantage point next to a tree a good distance away, I see Cassidy burst into tears, and the guy beside her wraps her in his arms. She doesn’t need him, she needs me. Or was the other day an act? Is her relationship with that asshole back on? Was it ever really off? Was she just playing with me? Maybe I’m being played for a fool.

I instinctively move to go to her when there’s a hand on my shoulder, stopping me.

“I wouldn’t recommend that, dude.”

The voice is vaguely familiar, and I turn around to find Ryan Crawford, the lead singer from Indigo King, who we opened for a while ago at Newton’s Resort before they got popular. He’s got sunglasses on, and his dark hair is hidden under a baseball cap, so it took me a second to recognize him. There are a lot of musicians here, but all of them are locals. Ryan’s a big fucking deal. I never in a million years expected to see him here.

“Ryan. What are you doing here?” I glance behind him for anyone else from his band, but it’s just him. I don’t see an entourage at all either. It’s a dumb question, and I know it as soon as it comes out of my mouth, why else would he be here?

“Paying my respects, man. Andy was a great musician.” He looks around briefly, making sure nobody sees him. More than anything, ensuring nobody notices him talking to me, the murderer. “I’m sorry about your friend and brother.”

“Thanks.”

“I’d say your drummer, but I know he was more than that to you.”

I look at him curiously for a moment, but then nod. “He was.”

He releases a small laugh. “You probably don’t remember that night, do you?”

“Most of it,” I say, but I honestly don’t remember much of that night at all. We were in full-blown party mode, and the only thing I remember is waking up the next day on the floor of the hotel hallway. I turn back to the service, my eyes searching for Cassidy again and finding her now pulled away from asshole suit guy.

“Well, before we all got black-out drunk, you and Andy both sat me down, and, over what I’m pretty sure was a fairly rigged game of poker, told me how you guys had known each other forever, and were going to be the next big thing. Even bigger than Incendiary Ink.”

“Did we? That sounds like Andy.” I’ve got Ryan Fucking Crawford talking to me, wanting to reminisce, and I’m more concerned with what Cassidy is doing. Even if the asshole beside her is her boyfriend, I need to see that she’s okay. That’s got to mean something.

He’s quiet for a minute, but then follows my gaze and asks, “Who’s that in the blue dress you’re fixated on?”

I can feel my face get warm at his question. “Andy’s twin sister, Cassidy.”

“No shit.”

“No shit,” I repeat. They’re still holding hands, Sid and suit guy. What the fuck was his name?

“Well, hey man, I gotta bail for a meeting.
