Chapter Nine

The smoke from the fire reached for Mamoru like a lover’s hands. A black mist rode upon it, entering him as he breathed, bewitching and calming his mind. Lady Kitsune knelt at his side where she held his hand and drained him of his spirit energy, leaving him defenseless and weak.

“No!” Turning from the table, I was struck down before I could take a step in Mamoru’s direction. Something hard had hit my shoulder. Not wasting any time, I glanced to the side and spotted the table. It would have to do. I grabbed the table’s leg and flung it behind me. Pictures and other knickknacks toppled to the stone floor to smash beside me. A man grunted. I rolled across the floor and over cracking glass to get away from the sound he’d made. Then, I saw him. The guard had snuck up behind me and slammed the butt of his blaster down on my shoulder. The fucking bastard.

Unfortunately, the bastard wasn’t alone. He kicked the table out of his way. Two more guards were joining him. I was becoming adept at fighting, but I didn’t see myself being successful against three large men with blasters, and especially not with an injured shoulder. I was outnumbered, and Mamoru was blissfully unaware. One thing was certain, if I didn’t do something and fast, the hostess from hell would drain him, and he’d assuredly fade.

Desperate, I concentrated on needing to be beside him and slipped. The guards stopped and stared, not comprehending where I’d gone. I ran to Mamoru and grabbed his hand. However, she saw me and gazed back at me. In the spirit realm, with energy stolen from the Okami making her strong, she watched me with eyes fueled by hatred. Behind her, tails, like those of foxes, danced like flames. I had to get her to take her hands off of him. Grabbing the tea service, I flung it at her face. She lifted her hands instinctually. I grabbed Mamoru and concentrated on needing to be beside our dirt bike.

The spirit realm rushed by and then flung us out into the woods. I gagged and dry-heaved, turning my face away from him and to the leaf-strewn forest floor. While I was sick, he lifted his hand and touched the dirt bike. On his back, he watched the tree branches above us for a moment as if trying to comprehend what had befallen us. It didn’t take him long.

He sat up, and an angry rush of words left him which he spoke in a language unknown to me. Putting aside his fury, he pulled my hair back to keep me from barfing on it. In the distance, men were yelling. In a calmer tone, he said, “Stay here. I will make certain they do not follow us.”

“What are you going to do?” I spat into the dirt.

His eyes glowed white. He didn’t have to say anything for me to sense his intentions. Then, he shifted. The massive black wolf vanished into the trees.
