Chapter Eight

Moving in with Julian and Kaspar had been a big change for Calum, and he hated changes. Having Duane around the house changed everything once again, although Calum supposed he couldn’t complain. With one of the babies already born, things had changed. It wasn’t just Duane, no matter how much Calum wished he could blame him for all of it.

Since he had no intention of having a conversation with Duane, he’d taken to avoiding him. That had been easy when Duane lived with the other guards, but it was almost impossible now that he was in the same house. Calum hated it, but he’d started getting up early to get breakfast ready before Duane could get back from his run, and as soon as he heard Duane’s footsteps, he vanished back into his bedroom. It was annoying, and it meant he wasn’t helping Julian and Kaspar as much, but he didn’t know how else to deal with this.

He didn’t know what to do about the fact that he wanted Duane to be his actual boyfriend, not just a fake one.

Calum was glad when Cal started crying. He rushed out of his bedroom, hoping he’d get to Cal before he woke his fathers, who were having a nap. His crying cut off, though, which meant Calum was too late. He still stepped into the nursery to see if Kaspar needed anything, but to his surprise, Kaspar wasn’t the one holding his son.

Duane was.

Cal looked tiny in Duane’s broad hands. Duane could hurt him, but even though Calum didn’t know him, he was sure Duane would never do something like that. The way he was cradling Cal against his chest was proof.

Duane started to turn, and Calum quickly stepped back into the hallway. He had no idea what was happening, but he was curious.

“What’s the problem, little guy?” Duane asked, his voice rumbling.

Calum found himself relaxing at the sound. He couldn’t imagine Cal not feeling the same.

“You don’t smell like you need a diaper change, but maybe I should check. Or should I take you to your dad? But he’s sleeping, and considering how many times you wake up during the night, he needs at least another hour. You think you can be good with me during that time?”

Calum closed his eyes. This shouldn’t be as adorable as it was, dammit. Duane wasn’t here to be Cal’s babysitter. He wasn’t here to cradle Cal in his arms and talk to him as softly as he was.

Why the fuck was Calum jealous of the baby?

“Oh,” another voice said, and Calum realized Julian had come in through the connecting door between his bedroom and the nursery.

“Sorry about this,” Duane said. “I was in the hallway when he started crying. I was hoping you and Kaspar would get some more sleep.”

“Well, you don’t have to worry. I’m awake, and you can give Cal to me.”

“I’ll go warm some milk, if that’s okay with you.”

“It would be perfect.”

Calum’s eyes widened when he realized Duane would have to walk past him.
