It was about this time that Ham got home, and his wife told him that Paul was missing; that she had searched and had called, but that she could find no trace of him. Ham grunted his disapproval, ambled out in front of the cabin, and there gave vent to a long and melodious whoop. This he followed by, “Paul! O Paul!”

A fox answered his call, and a barred owl laughed with ancient derisive mirth. Again Ham whooped. The fox sulked away, but the great owl flew near on downy wings, and rolling his eyes and ruffling his feathers, hooted with satisfied contempt. Claws the wildcat, on whose trail the sturdy hounds were relentless, heard the shouting and snarled in the gloomy covert; for to him it meant pursuit and danger. Savage and treacherous, he did not exert his powerful strength, relying on his cunning to save him. From sodden tussock to mossy log, and from mossy log to reedy ridge he sprang with marvelous ease and swiftness. Once he sharpened his claws gingerly on the harsh bark of a craggy old live-oak, blasted and spectral, that watched above the swamp. On and on he went, over little hillock and across sandy islands, with the hounds eager on his tangy scent.
