CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

JESSE

It seems like forever until Brody gives me a nod and I know we’re finally alone. With the door locked and my room spelled for privacy, no one should interrupt us now that River, Jack, and Maverick are down in the kitchen.

Silence settles around us, as I watch Brody move around the room. When he’s distracted like this, his vampire side becomes easier to see. His movements are fast and a bit jerky and I swear there are times when he forgets to breathe.

“I wish I could say something to help,” he says. “What you saw…what they are plotting…it’s not only disgusting, it’s an entirely new level of villainous and depraved.”

“Logically, I know we’ll fight everything they plan, but there’s a part of me—a small, vulnerable part—that is terrified they’ll succeed. The idea that Chad might take out his hatred on me like that and create a child being under those monstrous circumstances…”

“It’ll never happen,” he says, rushing forward. He climbs onto the bed with me and lays me on my side, facing him. “I will burn down the world before I let that happen. Branston and Belmont don’t know about our bond. If anything happens, I’ll feel it. If they drug you or kidnap you or even if they frighten you, I’ll know it and I’ll come.”

I swallow. “Do you swear you’ll find me?”

“I’ll always find you, Jesse. You’re like a lighthouse in the darkness of my life—the beacon that guides me through choppy waters.”

Knowing that our bond can be traced back so I can’t go missing helps a lot. My mental hamster has been running in its wheel, going a mile a minute since Jack and I eavesdropped on their conversation.

I’ve been trying to process it. How dare they? What’s worse, I have no idea how to ensure their plan can never progress.

Belmont already has Wyatt.

Maybe Floyd would help.

“I need to get this fucking tracker out of my arm. What if I need to run?”

Brody follows my gaze to my arm and brushes a gentle caress over my skin. “The problem has never been about getting the tracker out, Jesse. The problem is that they’ll know the moment you do. While you’re here, it makes no sense. But if you need to run, it’ll be out in a matter of minutes.”

That makes me feel tons better.

“Belmont has done something to Wyatt. He admitted it to Branston. It sounded like he uses his private council tutoring sessions with my brother to brainwash him and keep him in line. Maybe if he misses a few of those, the programming will wear off.”

“Not if it’s a spell. We need to find out what spell it is so we can locate the counter spell or the remedy.”

That makes sense.

I brush at the warmth dampening my cheeks. “I’m sorry for the tears. I’m not sure where they’re coming from. I’m mad more than sad.”

“It’s a lot to process.”

Brody lays back and tugs me over his chest, so my head rests against his collarbone, my arm drapes over his ribs, and my legs fall on either side of his right leg.
