Chapter Thirteen

Clover’s only news station reported a storm was headed their way, and the townsfolk buzzed around in a panic, buying water, paper towels, toilet paper, and food. Eric was not one of them. He was out purchasing office supplies and a new computer. He still hadn’t returned, and that worried Holly. It was too late to cancel the afternoon patients, since some of them had already arrived. She was on the phone, talking to an insurance representative to get a quote on her building, when he returned.

She walked outside to help him. “Did you hear about the storm coming our way?”

“Bernard told me when I ran into him at the office supply store. I knew something was going on, because there were more people than normal out at the market and grocery store, and the traffic on Main Street was backed up. That’s the reason I’m late.”

Heavy, dark clouds in the distance rolled toward them. Eric handed her a bag from the backseat. “Wow, that cloud is really dark,” she said, pointing. Her heart sank as she thought of the already sagging roof at The Sweet Spot.

“We’d better get these things inside,” Eric said, carrying a box away from the car.

The weight of the box was just enough to make the muscles on his forearms, bared by his rolled-up shirt sleeves, bulge, only adding to his appeal. Holly swallowed hard.

“Are we going to set up the computer today?” she asked, more to distract herself from her wayward thoughts of Eric holding her body to his with his strong arms. If she was going to make it through their planned afternoon of setting up the computer and registering for the online programs he’d mentioned in their meeting, she needed to have a clear mind.

“It should be plug-and-play. What time is the last patient?”

“Mr. Graham is scheduled for three o’clock,” she said, removing another plastic bag filled with office supplies from the backseat. “I can probably reschedule him. With this weather, he’s probably not going to try to come anyway.”

Eric looked up at the sky. “Yes, great idea. Let’s get in here so we can get these folks back home before the storm hits.”

They carried everything into the building, and Eric apologized to those patients as they passed by. They placed it all in a small room toward the front of the office.

“I’ll get started after I call Mr. Graham.”

“If you’re sure?” Eric said, setting the box down then pulling a notepad from the desk toward him. “Here is the website for the software you need to download,” he said, scribbling the words on the paper.

“Of course, go on,” she said, walking behind him. She closed the door and went back to her desk.

Two hours later, the dark clouds colored the sky like midnight as the storm drew closer. They’d handled every patient that took a chance to come out and cancelled the others. Holly wanted to check on The Sweet Spot, but she couldn’t be in two places at once. Whatever was holding that ceiling up at the bakery had been doing so for a year now.
