Chapter 10

Verity

I gave Argus one last kiss goodbye before I headed out the door with Penelope. She had asked me to call her Penny, but I giggled at the thought of Argus calling her Peanut. I supposed that was a childhood nickname, but I could see why Penny wouldn’t like it. It wasn’t exactly an adult name or a feminine one.

She drove us into town, and I watched out the window at everything we passed. It was a pretty decent sized town, and only about twenty minutes away from the house. When we passed Driscoll Industries, Penny pointed it out and told me that’s where Argus and the twins worked.

Argus had explained a little about what the company did, and I knew that it was successful. Only shifters worked there, but it also helped fund the pack. Income was given out based on a certain pack hierarchy that I didn’t understand, but all of the pack received their income from Driscoll Industries, even those who didn’t work there.

When we turned onto Main Street, I couldn’t help marvel at how adorable it was. It looked like something from a Norman Rockwell painting, the buildings obviously very old and lining both sides of the street.

I bet it was lovely around the holidays. The street lanterns along the sidewalk were vintage style and added to the charm. The poles were black, and there were four rounded globes at the top that held the globe lights.

They were evenly spaced on either side of the road, and they ran for several blocks in front of the store fronts. I saw little cafes with bistro tables set out on the sidewalks under awnings, and several boutiques and curiosity shops. There was a bookstore and an art studio along with a craft store and an antique store.

Penny drove the full length of the shops so that I could see everything first, then she pulled over and parked along the curb. We both got out, and I had to admit, I was quite excited about a shopping excursion.

This was something that I had never been allowed to do before. The shifters in my previous packs had been afraid of me and what I could do, and they had kept a tight rein on me, never letting me leave the settlement where the pack lived. I had never even been shopping for my own clothes before, but I was eager for the new experience.

Penny led me into the first boutique that we came to and I looked around in fascination at all the clothes that hung on racks in rows and along the walls of the store to my right and left. I had never been inside a store like this before, and I was amazed by everything I saw, unable to take it all in at once.

When Penny grabbed my hand, she pulled me forward to a rack of dresses. I could sense her excitement and I had to smile. “Oh, this would look amazing on you,” she said, holding out a light blue sun dress.
