Chapter 10

Ben

Fucking dickhead! Ben ground his teeth. Why was he screwing around with that fucking demon? How long had they been seeing each other? Did this mean Simon was right in his original assessment that Kevin was the traitor among them? Bitterness filled the back of his throat at the thought he didn’t know Kevin as well as he thought he did. The idea that Kevin betrayed them stung deeper than Ben would like to admit.

He marched to the cafeteria and picked up Asi a coffee to go and a blueberry bagel with extra cream cheese. Ben mumbled out a thank you to the cashier, his mind swirling with questions. Originally, Simon’s gift of the future had shown some of the tangled lines that Kevin had betrayed them. But Kevin had proven his loyalty to Asi and the others when they battled Lucas or was it all a farce to throw them off? Learn their strengths and weaknesses. Wait until the time was right then strike when victory was assured. Why delay until now? Kevin could’ve shown his true colors during the battle to defeat Lucas but he fought with them.

Unless Lucas and he planned this. Some death spells increased the power. Did Kevin plan to resurrect Lucas using Tarrin? Bring back their enemy at the cost of their son’s life?

Bile burned a hole in his throat. If Kevin was involved in the kidnapping or harming one hair on Tarrin’s head, Ben would rip him apart. He didn’t care that Asi loved him—the bastard would be dead.

But if Kevin was innocent, then why keep this a secret? He wasn’t gathering information from the demon or hell even roughing it up to figure out where their son was. Nope. He was aroused and then embarrassed when Ben had burst in on their…whatever it was they’d been doing…or about to do. Ben shivered. Gross.

He made his way back to the ICU waiting room and handed Asi her food and drink.

“Thanks. Where’s Kevin?” she asked.

It wasn’t his place to tell her. Let Kevin confess all his dirty secrets but he couldn’t leave her in the dark forever. Still the idea of telling her, hurting her with Kevin’s secret made him feel like his insides were burning up. He couldn’t do it. Couldn’t be the one to hurt her. She’d already gone through so much.

“Um, he needed to take care of something. He should tell you all about it when he gets back.” And he needed to share what he’d found with the other guys soon if Kevin didn’t come clean so they could plot what to do next. For Asi’s sake, he hoped there was a logical explanation and Kevin hadn’t turned on them. Ben sat beside her, curling his fists in his lap so he could keep his voice steady. “Any news about Jenna?”

“Yes,” she breathed out, her breath blowing across the coffee. “She’s stable but they put her into a medical coma for now until they figure out what happened.”

“That’s partially good news then.
