Shit.

I’d know that voice anywhere.

I swallowed hard, not wanting to turn around. If I turned around, then it was real. I was caught trespassing in the demon lord’s house. And I was pretty sure he was responsible for kidnapping Elisa.

But how the hell could he see me?

I was supposed to be invisible unless Rei’s potion had worn off.

Slowly, I turned.

He loomed over me on the stairs, his form cast in shadow. His eyes seemed to glow, burning into me. He was so beautiful that it was almost hard to look at him, and that made him even scarier. A person who looked like him could get away with so much.

“I can sense you’re there,” he said. “It doesn’t matter that I can’t see you. I’d know you anywhere.”

The deep timbre of his voice sent a shudder down my spine.

If he couldn’t see exactly where I was, maybe I had a shot at escape. But since he was blocking the door above, I’d have to go the other way.

Silently, I tried to creep down to the next stair.

“Don’t even try it.” The cold in his voice sent a shiver of fear through me, and I ran, leaping down the stairs three at a time.

I was nearly to the bottom when he grabbed me around the waist and threw me over his shoulder. I shrieked, pounding on his back. “Let me go, you bastard!”

“No.”

I growled and called my blade from the ether. It fit snugly into my hand, the forefinger ring secure, and I plunged it into his side.

He grunted and cursed, jerking me off his shoulder and yanking the blade from me. The ring at the end of the hilt jerked on my finger, sending agony through my hand, but he managed the pull the dagger away and throw it down the stairs.

It clattered toward the bottom, and I lunged for it.

He pulled me back and spun me to face him, his hands tight on my shoulders as my body pressed to his hard chest. My breath caught in my lungs, terrifying desire coiling low in my belly.

“How the hell can you see me?” I demanded.

“Up close, I see the outline of you.”

Damn it.

I hated what his proximity did to me, but I couldn’t help the heat that surged through me. It was primordial. Impossible to fight, making me feel like we were connected on a level I couldn’t fully understand.

I drew in a shuddering breath, trying to ignore the feeling.

He towered over me, a veritable wall of a man as he growled, “Don’t ever try that again.”

The ferocity of his low voice sent a shiver through me. I’d landed a solid blow.

Good.

But… “Why aren’t you on the ground, writhing in pain?”

“You think I can’t withstand a little stab in the side?” His mouth twisted in a wry smile. “You don’t know me at all.”

“And I don’t want to.” I tried to yank away from him, but he gripped me tightly.

“You can walk beside me, or you’re going back over my shoulder.
