It might have been right before Christmas, but James Coxwell was on a mission. He’d had a scare but he was going to take a lesson from it. He was determined to look at every house available for sale in greater Rosemount and choose one. He remembered Dinah Dishman from high school and was glad that she knew the town as well as she did. There had to be a reason she was the most successful real estate agent in town.

She looked good, trim and professional in her Chanel jacket and dark trousers. Her snow boots seemed a bit incongruous, but he supposed they were practical. Maralys had suggested they wear shoes they could remove easily and Dinah’s boots had no laces either. She shoved a chunk of streaked hair behind her ear, her intensity reminding him of a much younger Dinah.

“It’s not as promising as it looks,” she told him and Maralys when they met in her informal office on the morning of the twenty-fourth. She had commandeered the corner table in the diner on Main Street, just down the block from Jen’s knitting store. “There are seven properties, but we can dismiss half of them right away.”

“Really?” Maralys said, smiling as the waitress brought her a cup of coffee.

James declined the coffee. “Why?” he asked Dinah.

She angled her laptop so he could see the display. “This one is a convenience store on the highway with living accommodations behind. It’s being sold as a business.”

“No,” Maralys said.

“Exactly,” Dinah agreed. “This one is a small apartment building.”

“Aren’t the commercial listings separate?” James asked.

“Not when the owner lives in, and that’s often what happens here. We don’t have many landlords with numerous properties.” Dinah scrolled down. “This third one is in a crappy part of town.”

“Is Rosemount big enough to have a wrong-side-of-the-tracks?” Maralys asked.

“Yes,” Dinah and James said in unison, then smiled at each other.

“A townhouse,” Dinah continued, then raised her gaze.

“No,” James said.

“More than half dismissed then,” she said. “But then, it’s a time of year when there aren’t many listings. There will be more in February.”

“I’d like to look now,” James said.

“And prices will probably be better in April,” Dinah advised. “Because there will be more properties available.”

“That’s not really a concern. We have a house in Boston to sell, and just want what works for us.”

“Which is?”

Maralys presented a list. “A bungalow would be best for us and we’d rather have a newer house than an older one.”

“So the two-story Colonial is out,” Dinah said. “Nice house, though. Classic.”

“We need three bedrooms, at a minimum, and would like an additional room that can be used as an office,” Maralys continued.

“Can it be in the basement?”

James and Maralys exchanged a glance. “A dry basement with a high ceiling,” James stipulated.

“What if it’s unfinished?” Dinah asked. “Would you finish it out yourself?”

James and Maralys eyed each other again. She shrugged. “I don’t see why not,” James said.

“Might give you a goal,” Maralys said with a twinkle in her eye. “Project manager, coordinating the worker guys so the work is done on time and on budget.
