Chapter 7
Gracie had been suffering lucid dreams ever since she laid her head on the pillow. She hated them because they were so clear. Ninety-nine percent of the time, they were also negative and tormenting. She had found out soon as she started changing her diet, eating more fruit that she slept deeper but at the cost of too many dreams.
That night, after arguing with Carter and fighting with Shelby, she was still battling them in her sleep. When she should have been resting, her stress rocketed higher. Pains in her sides woke her, and she rubbed her belly.
Calm down, Gracie. Itâs over.
She was going home first chance she got, and even if she had to give Carter visitation later, she wouldnât spend more time with him than necessary. Right now, it was all about the baby.
The thought popped into her head of Carter finding out about the pregnancy and blaming her for trying to trap him again. An agonizing pain shot through her core, and she cried out in alarm. This was no joke. What if she was losing the baby?
She rolled out of bed and got shakily to her feet. Tears spilled down her cheeks and she wobbled as fast as she could out of her room. Which one of the rooms was Ashâs? She hadnât noticed. Leaning against the wall, she tried to steady herself and ease the short breaths into deeper ones.
A sob escaped her. If she didnât find him now it might be too late. Maybe she should go back and call herself an ambulance. She cried harder, her heart pounding.
âAsh?â she called out quietly, as if he would hear that. She was almost hyperventilating now. âAsh, where are you?â
âTeal?â
She spun around and stumbled over her feet. He moved in a flash to steady her. She grasped his arms, digging her nails into his flesh. âI didnât know where your room was.â
âI was downstairs.â She heard his hesitation but couldnât see his face in the dimly lit hall. âWhy were you looking for my room?â
âHelp me, Ash. I thinkâ¦I thinkâ¦â She struggled to breathe.
He whipped her into his arms and carried her to her room. When he laid her on the bed, she fought him to rise again. He pressed her flat. âYou need to calm down, Teal. Whatâs wrong?â
âMy stomach hurts,â she whimpered. âI think Iâm losing the baby. Please help me.â
âI knew it!â Carter shouted from the open doorway. âI caught you two together.â
Ash whirled on him. âFuck off before I rearrange your face. You want to do something, go wake Mom up and tell her to get dressed. Sheâs going with me to the hospital with Teal.â
âWhaâ?â
âDo it!â
Carter disappeared, and Ash hurried to get Gracieâs shoes on her feet. He left her dressed in her nightgown, but she was too weak to protest. After he had secured his car keys and coat, he tucked her in her coat and carried her downstairs. By the time he was ready to leave, Emily was charging down the stairs, moving faster than Gracie could believe a woman her age could move.
