They didn’t speak for the rest of the sleigh ride, and by the time they pulled back up at the wait stop where the queue had once again lengthened, Rebecca had managed to restore her mood, eager to sample some of the delicious food and try the famous cider. Joshua helped her out of the sleigh and she held onto his hand as they made their way through the crowds. It was early evening now and it seemed as if the entire county had descended on the Christmas fair; families shared the space with young couples and groups of teens. The fairground rides were thronged, Christmas music played through the speakers and the stalls were doing a bustling trade. It was completely unlike New York at Christmas, but there was something endearing about the friendly, homespun nature of the event and, as they stopped to watch a local band, Rebecca couldn’t help moving to the music, her foot tapping out the rhythm, her body swaying, Joshua’s arms around her waist.

‘Hey, you can move,’ he murmured into her ear. ‘Did anyone ever tell you that you should be a dancer?’

‘Funnily enough, it has been mentioned once or twice,’ she told him, turning round to link her arms around his neck, drawing him into the dance. ‘You’re not too bad yourself.’

‘This is nothing; you should see me air guitar when the right song is on.’

‘Is that right?’

‘Oh, yes. I have been known to clear entire dance floors, especially when I skid across on my knees. My children don’t find it in the least bit embarrassing.’

‘I’m sure they don’t. Especially not when they were teenagers.’

‘Especially then.’

‘Well, I for one would love to see you air guitar.’

‘Maybe later, if you are a very good girl.’

‘I promise.’

Their gazes held and her breath hitched in her throat at the sheer naked desire she saw in Joshua’s eyes: desire, appreciation and, more attractive than either, liking and amusement. She leaned in for a brief kiss, loving the simplicity of whatever this was between them. Around them, people were continuing to sway and dance and she joined in, letting the beat of the drum, the bass guitar, thud through her, not worrying about grace or beauty, just enjoying the music and the moment, wanting to hang onto it for as long as she possibly could.
