Chapter 7
Ivy and Doris nibbled on cheese and crackers, veggies and dip, and mixed nuts in lieu of lunch as they worked. They planned what Ivy would put in each bedroom, then when they had everything figured out, Ivy pulled out her laptop and went online to shop.
After sheâd spent her quota for the day, Ivy sat back with a sigh. âI think itâs time to celebrate, donât you?â
Doris glanced at her watch. âI have another hour or so yet before Iâm due home, so why not?â
Ivy opened a bottle of wine. âCheers. To Dorisâs Decoratingâdynamite details to make your home stand apart from all the others!â She lightly touched the lip of her glass against Dorisâs.
âTo the Shining Star Bed and Breakfast, my first official client!â Doris took a healthy sip of her wine and smiled. âWow, thatâs good.â
âIt is, isnât it?â
âAfter my ex started hitting the bottle, I stayed away from alcohol. But this is a special occasion.â Doris took another long sip.
âI know.â Ivy refilled their glasses. She glanced at her computer screen, a flutter of panic hitting hard when she realized sheâd spent over a thousand dollars on this first round of accessories for the rooms upstairs, and that didnât even include all the items sheâd need for the bathrooms.
Cha-ching.
âUh-oh, are you having buyerâs remorse, all ready?â Doris asked, as if sensing her distress.
âMaybe just a little.â Ivy took another long drink of her wine. âIâm sure it will pass, right?â
âAbso-hic-lutely.â Doris put a hand over her mouth, her eyes wide. âOh-hic-dear. Sâcuse me. Seems I have the hic-ups.â
âAre we getting drunk?â Ivy stared at her wine glass. For a moment she saw two glasses, overlapping each other, but then they merged into one.
âI think so.â Doris nodded wisely. âYes. I-hic-believe we are.â
âHmm. Thatâs strange, weâve only had one glass each.â
âWeâre light-hic-weights. Like the wrestlers.â Doris giggled at her own joke.
Ivy grinned. âDoris, youâre so beautiful, especially when you smile. You should do that more often.â
âThink so?â Her expression turned wistful. âI guess I havenât had-hic-much of a reason to.â
âDonât let that lousy ex of yours get you down. Rise above him. Youâre smart and talented.â Ivy stared at her empty wine glass, then shrugged and refilled their glasses. Doris could walk home, no need to worry about drinking and driving in a small town like North Pole.
âI never thought of myself as-hic-either smart or talented.â
âYou are.â Ivy took another sip of her wine and suddenly sat up straight. âHey, I have a great idea. Why donât you and your kids spend Thanksgiving here with me?â
Doris was holding her breath in an effort to get rid of her hiccups. Ivy watched her face turn crimson, then she let out her breath in a whoosh. âAre you sure? I have to warn you, Iâm not very good in the kitchen.â
Apparently the holding her breath thing worked. âI can cook, and we can have the whole traditional meal.â Ivy was thrilled with her spur-of-the-moment idea. âI donât have any family to celebrate with, and having friends around is better anyway.
