Chapter Thirty

“I take it your show went well?” Jimmy leaned forward so he could be heard over the band on stage.

Michelle nodded and waved to a server. “Can I get a bottle of water and dirty martini please?”

“I'll take another beer, too, please,” Jimmy added. “I was going to try to catch your show, but the boss asked me to help restock the beer cooler before I left.”

Michelle glanced at his biceps, stretching the fabric of his black t-shirt. He was certainly built for heavy lifting, she thought. “I think it was our best show yet, but I didn't see anyone who looked like a talent scout.”

“They don't stick out as much as you might think. I tended bar at a couple of clubs in Nashville. The scouts looked like everyone else, but they'd talk to me, ask about the bands, how the crowds reacted to them, how long they'd been playing.”

The server returned with their drinks and Michelle downed the bottle of water. “I didn't know you were from Nashville. What brought you to Florida?”

“I'm from Florida. I went to Nashville hoping to get a record deal. I tended bar to pay the rent, but I played every chance I got. A few of the scouts I met while behind the bar saw me play as well. One of them was kind enough to tell me I didn't have the ‘it’ factor they were looking for. Six months later, I packed up and came home.”

Michelle studied him, trying to figure out what he was missing. At six foot two, with muscles in all the right places and brown eyes that could melt the heart of the most bitter woman, Jimmy appeared to exude the “it” factor. “If they didn't think you could make it, there's no chance for Tangled Web. We look like a bunch of gutter rats next to you.”

Jimmy's laugh made the hair on Michelle's neck tingle. “I would never call you a gutter rat. Jonesy, maybe, but not you. I don't think my looks were the problem, though. I love music and I loved playing, but I never had the burning passion you have. That's what the scouts are looking for.”

She shifted in her seat, the intimate look in Jimmy's eyes drawing her in. He leaned closer and she could smell his aftershave over the normal bar odors. It made her think of a regal stag emerging from a cedar forest.

“You have the ‘it’ factor, Michelle. The scouts will find you.” He was so close she could feel his breath on her neck. She turned to face him, and without hesitation, he closed the distance between them, meeting her lips.

She fell into his kiss, savoring the taste of beer and salt. The sound of the band on stage was soon drowned out by the pounding of her heart. Jimmy pulled her closer, his hand twisting in her thick hair.

“You want to get out of here?” he whispered in between kisses.

Michelle moaned as his lips moved down her neck.
