Chapter 12

The following day, Reilly held Ray’s hand as they slowly walked through the corridor of light. It was otherworldly, a shimmering canopy of colors that transported them to an extra-terrestrial-esque dimension. It didn’t hurt that both she and Ray were still intoxicated by the buzzy high that comes along with new love.

Was it actually love? Perhaps that was premature. Infatuation, maybe? Enchantment? Passion? Lust? Or a pot-luck combination thereof? The feeling could make even the most mundane of experiences fun. However, in an environment such as this one, it was a perfect storm of knee-watering romance.

As Reilly and Ray floated through the Christmas lightwalk—a sparkling corridor of trees illuminated through the dark, late afternoon woods, the two found themselves momentarily alone in an alcove of silver light.

Reilly pulled Ray’s hand until it was around her waist and put her lips on his, stealing a kiss, a momentary fix. Until they heard the crunching of other footsteps behind them, pushing them to continue through the exhibit.

Reilly didn’t truly recognize herself. It had been so long since this character in the kaleidoscope of different sides of her persona had shown its face. She wasn’t exactly the jump-your-bones-in-an-elevator, passionate make-out kind of person. But since she and Ray had kissed, her head had been spinning with love drunkenness.

It was the kind of thing that wasn’t sustainable, of course. You couldn’t constantly live in a pink bubble of lovey-dovey bliss where everything was a heady romance novel dream sequence. Sooner or later, you’d have to settle back down to earth, where people wore their mouthguards to bed, taxes had to be paid, and garbage taken out.

Still, there’s just nothing like this feeling.

As they exited the other side of the lightwalk, they were met by a smiling Emma. Her joy was so radiant that she might as well have been one of the lights in the exhibit.

Seeing Emma, Reilly instinctively let go of Ray’s hand. She didn’t know exactly how much Ray wanted to tell his daughter about what was happening between them and decided to leave that ball in his court.

However, Reilly saw the kid’s eagle-eye catch the briefest of glimpses, a split second before they disentangled their fingers. Nothing got by that kid. Reilly felt a tinge of embarrassment at being caught, almost as though, once again, they were the kids and Emma was the parent but was put at ease after reading the happiness on Emma’s face. This was what she wanted. For her dad to be happy.

“It’s stunning, Emma. Truly stunning. I felt as though I was stepping into a different world.”

“That means a lot, coming from you.” Emma beamed.

The lightwalk had been a perfect metaphor for Reilly’s experience over these last few days. She had stepped into a different world, momentarily leaving her old one behind. She knew it was bound to catch up. It had already started to. But she was content to enjoy this next experience for as long as it lasted.

Hopefully, forever, she heard a small optimistic voice in her head say.
