Chapter Six
âSo what were you and Holly talking about? It looked interesting,â Gabe remarked as the group broke up and they joined the rest of the Acostas who were lining up to take their turn at a buffet table groaning with food.
âOh, nothing.â Lucy could feel her cheeks heating up, thanks to the lie. âJust this and that.â
Gabe obviously was in no way convinced, but this wasnât the time to bring up his suggestion about Brazil.
When was a good time? Sooner or later?
There might be no later!
âAre you sure she wasnât talking about me stealing the polo crown from Nero Caracas when one of the Acostas was supposed to win it back?â Gabe suggested. âHollyâs husband, Ruiz, for instance?â Gabeâs teeth flashed white against his swarthy face as he grinned at the thought of his triumph.
âYou polo guys are incredible. The whole world doesnât revolve around you. And donât raise a brow at me, Senhor Ortoya, Iâm by no means impressed.â
Gabeâs smile just widened. Had he even shaved last night? She could detect the faint scent of his cologne, but his stubble had lost no time growing backâ
âWhere are you now, Lucy?â
No way was she going to tell him that.
Right now? In the middle of an erotic fantasy involving Gabe Ortoya, the hottest man in the room. And that was saying something!
Fortunately, before Gabe had a chance to explore her thoughts, Romy Acosta came over to move them to the head of the queue. âBefore the family fall on the food and eat everything,â Romy explained.
âSoâ¦Brazil,â Gabe murmured as they walked together down the length of the buffet table.
âBrazil?â
âDonât act dumb with me, Lucy. I know youâve got something in mind. I can feel your tension. Youâre bursting to ask me something.â
Or do something. How was she supposed to concentrate on anything when Gabe brushed against her as he leaned across the table to pick up a piece of bread?
âWould you like to work as my personal groom?â
âIâd rather work with your horses.â
Gabe laughed. âIâm sure you would.â But then he frowned. âDo you really want custard with your turkey, Lucy?â
Gabe had thrown her to the point where she was moving along the various platters of food, spooning things at random onto her plate, Lucy realised.
âHereâyouâd better start again.â Gabe handed over a clean plate. âAnd stop looking so worried. Iâve got a proposition for you.â
âFor me? What kind of proposition?â she asked, hesitantly.
Gabe nodded as he loaded her plate with a man-sized turkey leg, half a loaf of bread and a dollop of coleslaw so big it made the plate tip over. âThereâs a lot of competition in polo, and youâre very well placed to assess my training methods. Publicity does no one any harm, so Iâd like you to come out to Brazil to see for yourself what I do there. Then you can write a report and publish it as part of your dissertation. What do you say to that, Lucy Lavender?â
Was that before or after she
