“I’m ready to return home whenever you are.” Regina stared at the dirt road. She’d been excited that Dane had gone to such efforts to rescue her, until he mentioned his horse and buggy. Of course, he was merely chasing after his property. Why should he care what happened to her?

“I should check the horse over and make sure the buggy wasn’t damaged before we return to town.”

Regina nodded. She needed to distance herself from her handsome champion. “I think I’ll walk down to the river and wash the dust off my face.”

“Watch out for snakes.”

“I doubt they’re active this late in the year, but I’ll keep an eye open.”

He pursed his lips, nodded, and then turned his back to her and ran his hands down the mare’s leg.

Sighing loudly, Regina walked along the road until she found a place with easy access to the water. Slowly, she made her way downhill to the river’s edge. The last thing she wanted was to trip and fall, landing in the water. Such a sight that would make.

She removed her gloves and knelt beside the slow-moving river. The setting was so peaceful after her frantic buggy ride. Why hadn’t the mare slowed? She’d pulled on the reins with as much strength as she had, but the mare still ran. She’d never experienced a runaway horse before, not even when she lived on the ranch. It was both frightening and thrilling.

Mother would be shocked and would most likely forbid her to go driving again for a while. Perhaps she wouldn’t tell her, so that she wouldn’t worry next time Regina went visiting. Was that the same as lying? But then, how would she explain making soup again? She sighed. Of course she was better off telling her parents what had happened rather than trying to hide it.

Three geese flew down and landed in the water about fifty feet away. She watched the trio until they floated past her, and then her thoughts returned to Dane McDermott. She’d been curious about the quiet man ever since he moved into the house behind hers. He looked to be a bit older than her twenty-one years. If she had to guess, she’d say he was twenty-five or so. She had wrestled in the past with her attraction to his dark features—black hair with a bit of a curl, dark brown eyes, and tanned complexion.

Regina sighed. As the preacher’s daughter, she wasn’t supposed to gawk at men, but Dane drew her gaze whenever he was near. She was a woman who longed for a husband and children of her own, but most men seemed afraid to approach her—or perhaps none had ever been interested in her. Holding the church members’ babies brought satisfaction for a brief moment, but she always had to return the child. One day she’d have a baby that would be hers. At least she prayed that was God’s will for her.

And the image of Dane McDermott kept reappearing in her mind and dreams.
