Chapter 15

(Sophie)

“You’re going to love Pastor Morgan, mom and dad. When he does his sermon you feel like you’re listening to an audiobook. He immerses you in the story.” Sophie grinned, pulling into the parking lot looking for a spot. “Not once have I felt like nodding off while he was preaching since we moved here—and you know sometimes I get tired in church. The way he delivers the sermon and his mannerisms leave you hanging on his every word. Even the kids watch him sometimes instead of attending Sunday school.”

Dad looked back at the kids. “Is that right?”

“Yeah, grandpa. We like hearing some of his stories but sometimes we want to hang out with our friends at Sunday School.” Zoey told him.

He laughed. “There’s Bridgette.” Dad pointed to the right as she opened the back door of her car for something.

Sophie pulled into the spot next to Bridge and as soon as the car was in park, the kids unfastened their seatbelts, and hopped out of the car on Zoey’s side. Bridge was a big kid at heart and they never got enough of her.

Following her mom around the back of the car Sophie yelled out, “Hey Bridge.”

Bridge hugged the kids and greeted them all. “Hello mom. Hey Soph.”

“Hey kids. Do you want to sit with us or go to Sunday School?”

Cam looked at Zoey, scratching his fingers on his pants.

“What do you want to do, Cam?” Her protective daughter asked him.

“I think I want to stay with grandma and grandpa and you guys.”

“Me too.” Zoey added.

Sophie smiled. “Perfect.”

Walking down the aisle, mom whispered, “There’s Liam.”

Her head whipped around. She noticed he was sitting where he always sat, his attention fixed on the program.

“Does anyone sit with him?” Her thoughtful mother asked.

She fought a grin knowing exactly where this was headed. “Not always. It depends how many people attend. And believe me, Liam is not afraid anymore to carry on a conversation with someone.”

Bridgette turned into the row they typically occupied. Once they sat, mom disclosed, “Oh, that’s no fun.”

She turned to look at him again, as did Sophie. She saw her raise her hand and wave, trying to get his attention. “Mother, maybe he likes sitting alone. Have you thought about that?”

His head perked up as a grin appeared on his handsome face. He nodded at her mom’s non-verbal invitation and made his way to their row, taking a seat next to her mother.

“Hello, Mrs. Reynolds. It’s nice to see you again. Hey Sophie.” He grinned and winked, which her mother did not miss, those dimples lighting up his eyes as it so often did.

Mom turned to her, pinching her lips tightly together as if she learned some secret. Sophie rolled her eyes trying not to smile before turning away.

Mom asked Liam about his family and if he would be seeing them for the holidays. Sophie leaned forward to warn him, “Feel free to blow her off if she gets too personal. She’s relentless at times.” Sophie shot her mom a look as she patted her leg in response.
