Chapter Nine

Alex headed out to the car. If he was going to move on with his life, he needed to give Kirk the green light on the party. First, he needed to stop Jill from her master plan to get him together with Molly. If she didn’t love him, then they both deserved to move on.

He sent Jill a text.

Don’t push Molly. The way I left things wasn’t nice and you pushing won’t help. I can do this on my own.

He drove back to the grocery store and spoke with Kirk. When he returned to the car, his phone rang. Jill.

“Hi,” he said. “What’s wrong?”

“You really want me to stop pushing you and Molly together?” Jill sighed. “Why?”

“When we split, I cut things clean, but it wasn’t nice. She’s on the verge of allowing me to be friends with her again and I’m worried that if you push, she’ll put up walls.”

“You’re not giving yourself enough credit. You’re quite smooth when you try and if you let me do a little nudging, you’ll have your dream girl by Christmas.”

“Don’t get excited.” He had some plans, but he couldn’t guarantee Molly would give him a second chance. After she saw what he’d done to get into her good graces, she might never talk to him again—or she’d admit she loved him, too.

“I’ll back off, but I can’t be trusted to not push just a little on Christmas Eve. You’re meant for each other. Everyone can see it,” Jill said. “I’ll talk to you later.”

“Yeah.” He hung up, then drove over to Molly’s store. Maybe he was crazy, but he needed to see Molly. Maybe he’d bump into her. He headed into the bookstore. On first check, he didn’t notice her. He wandered over to the display of his books, then pulled the pen from his pocket. He autographed the rest of the books and kept an eye out for Molly.

“What are you doing?” Molly put her hand on his arm. “Oh, you’re signing them. Thank you.”

The warmth of her touch filled his soul. “I thought I’d come back and leave a surprise in the books. This way anyone who didn’t make it yesterday can have a signed copy.”

“Would you mind if we labeled them as signed?” She half-smiled. “I know it’s forward and you want this to be a surprise.”

“I’d be hurt if you didn’t.” He could gaze into her eyes forever and not get tired.

“I’ll make up a sign.” She let go, but didn’t walk away. “You came in here to be benevolent?”

“To spread some Christmas cheer and to touch base with my friend.” He grinned, wondering if she’d caught on to his wording. “What if someone wished for a copy of my book and couldn’t imagine getting a signed one? I wanted to add an extra surprise. Don’t you like to get autographed books?”

“I love first editions.” She blushed. “Then thank you. My customers will appreciate it. Merry Christmas. I’ve got to get back to work…friend.”

She’d noticed. Hallelujah. “I’m not going anywhere.
