We'd lingered too long making gingerbread houses. I'd lost track of time, falling into the fun and forgetting all about my obligations to the inn. And now the grocery store in Stoneley was a zoo filled with short-tempered human animals, all fighting for the last gallon of milk and eight-pack of toilet paper.

Hunter and I decided to divide and conquer. I glanced at Aunt Emma's list and sent him off to hunt down enough chicken for a couple of dinners. Chicken seemed the one element that intersected all the bubbles of the Venn diagram of the guests' food restrictions. Except for the one vegan guest. Aunt Emma had started a bakery's worth of bread after breakfast to go with the soup and chili. She needed things that could get stuffed between two slices of bread—almond butter, deli meat, cans of tuna.

We worked like a well-synched pair to load the belt at the checkout line, then the truck—as if we'd been doing this for years—stirring a longing best left alone.

"Tonight," I said, after we got back to the inn and he helped me bring in a week's worth of groceries. "I'll introduce you to Christmas movies." I glanced at him over my shoulder as I put the chicken away in the fridge. "Bring a box of tissues."
