A “Welcome the Boys Home” contest was sponsored by the Washington Post and supported by a number of the city’s influential leaders. An endorsement from the executive secretary of the Washington Restaurant Association convinced city restaurants and other retail establishments to join in as well. The aim of the contest was simple: award the grand prize of a $100 Victory Bond to the home or business with the best outdoor holiday display welcoming the area’s veterans home from the war.

The winning entry was from the Montgomery family, who welcomed home four nephews. Three of the boys were home for the holiday; the other was serving in Hawaii with the expectation of being discharged by the summer of 1946. The display used four lighted stars made by the four brothers before the war, and long before they could have fathomed their service. The Montgomery’s winning display was described by the Post:
