“The goal is that the skills taught will be easily transferable to other situations and places,” says Job. The doctor is talking about the training courses run out of the community centers in Sichuan. “Eventually, we would like them to be carried beyond the local community into other regions, provinces and even nations. When young people attend a course, we hope they will be inspired for life. They’re not just going to gain some practical skills. Through the fellowship and team situations, directly or indirectly, they’re going to be exposed to godly values, to biblical principles, and learn to become socially responsible people of character. We hope their vision of the world will be expanded. Maybe one day they’ll even want to go out to the mission field themselves.”

On top of this, Job has devised a six-lesson course specifically geared toward churches on how to apply both the Great Commission and the Great Commandment at the same time. Its rollout is still in the early stages, and the course, no doubt, will be further refined over time; but he has already taught it in several different cities, and it has been favorably received not only by the churches but by some government officials as well. There are even some in the Religious Affairs Bureau who have asked for his materials.

“I believe the next step for the Church in China as a whole, whether rural, urban or Three Self,” says Job with conviction, “is to learn how to actually touch the community with the love and power of the gospel.” Despite the growth of Christianity in the country to date, the doctor believes the Church is still not doing this effectively. That growth, he says, was due more to a kairos period, a special window of time when God, in His grace, allowed people to find Him because they were so hungry.

“The Bible says that when you knock, the door will be opened to you; when you seek, you will find; and when you ask, it will be given to you. But [the churches] are all becoming more established now—with resources, finances and manpower multiplying. How can we use these more effectively to touch our communities with the love of Christ? We need to learn how to do that.”

It’s a gradual process to build up people to the point that they are both willing and able to handle being sent to the nations. Ruth echoes this: “It’s about taking it step by step, and building true character takes time and patience. Not only should our missionaries be learning about the Bible and God, but they should also be learning practical skills to sustain their livelihoods and learn how to do what they do better.” She pauses a moment to reflect on what she’s seen thus far. “A lot of young people were sent out already. They were eager and willing. They were bold and courageous. But the truth is that they couldn’t make it. They had unrealistic expectations, and so did their sending churches.
