Chapter 32

It wasn’t long before I saw Malik and Dominic step into the club. Malik’s gaze swept over the bar, tables, and dancefloor, searching until they came to rest on me. They skirted around the edge of the club as they made their way to us.

“I’m surprised it’s you two and not Caius,” I said when they reached our table and sat.

Malik shrugged. “I think this is his way of giving you as much space as he can while still keeping you all safe.” His gaze locked on Bethany as she moved with Aaron and Chelsea on the dance floor. “He’s trying not to smother you.”

“I can appreciate that,” I said as I reached for another bite of pie.

James appeared at my shoulder and whispered low in my ear, “We’ve got a problem.”

“What?” I twisted in my seat to look at him and caught his worried expression just before he noticed Malik and Dominic.

A mixture of chagrin and relief crossed his features. “It’s Lilly.”

Dominic’s suddenly tense gaze whipped to the dance floor where Lilly had been dancing just a few moments before. Malik was on his feet. “Where?”

Startled by the two demonborns’ reactions, I stood. “What’s wrong with Lilly?”

James’s attention focused on Malik and Dominic who both seemed to already have grasped the situation. “A back room…this way.”

He turned and started pushing through the crowd. Malik followed, the crush of people seeming to part for him as if the mortals instinctually grasped the possibility of danger, even if only on a subconscious level. I hurried after him, staying in his wake. Dominic kept on my heels, preventing anyone from jostling into me.

James led us past the bathrooms and into what looked like maybe a breakroom for the staff off a back hallway.

“I couldn’t get her to stop,” he said, apology in his voice as if it was somehow his fault.

Malik and Dominic both moved at once, and I saw what the problem was. Lilly sat on the floor, leaning against the wall with a man cradled against her. Markings glowed across her skin and her face showed the faint shadowing of her demon side. The man’s head lolled to the side, face blank as her mouth pulled at his jugular. Her eyes glowing liquid silver, she paused long enough to hiss at the approach of the two demonborn as if afraid they were there to take her prey before latching on to the man’s neck again. And I guess, technically, they were.

Dominic kneeled beside her while Malik positioned himself in front. A low growl bubbled through the blood around her lips when Malik reached for her. He clamped his hand on her jaw, forcing it open. As soon as her fangs were clear, Dominic dragged her into his arms and pinned her there while she tried to fight him.

Ignoring the blood that sprayed across his chest from the small wound in the man’s throat, Malik pulled Lilly’s victim beyond her reach and lifted him up long enough to run his tongue over the wound to seal it before letting the man fall in a heap at his feet.
