Lexi

It felt good to be home from the hospital. I was also glad to have the house to myself. My family had driven to Philly for my Grandmother’s birthday. I stayed behind because it was too soon to travel with a newborn.

I placed Kay-Kay in her crib, turning on the baby monitor. She was so precious. I always wanted a little girl and God blessed me with my angel. I kissed her on the forehead and tiptoed out of the nursery, heading downstairs. I was waiting for Dontae.

He said we needed to talk. I had to admit I was nervous. I had no clue what he wanted to talk about. He could be so wishy-washy sometimes. I placed the baby monitor on the coffee table and stretched out on the couch in the living room.

I was napping when I heard the front door open. I knew it was Dontae, so I didn’t bother lifting my head. I was too exhausted. I had forgotten what it was like taking care of a newborn. He wanted to talk. Somewhere in the conversation, I was going to ask about getting a nanny.

“Hey, babe.” He smiled, strolling into the living room. He bent down and kissed my cheek from behind the couch. I sat up and turned to face him.

“Where’s my angel?” he asked. Before I could utter another word, he was halfway up the steps, and then came back down with her secure in his arms.

“You’re going to spoil her,” I complained.

“I know, that’s what a daddy is supposed to do.” I shook my head in disagreement. I explained to him that Rosa wasn’t my daughter, but I had spoiled her like she was when we were growing up. I would buy her anything she wanted. Money was no object.

Once I told her it was time to stand on her own two feet, she started rebelling.

“You see how she treats me.” I sighed.

“Our daughter isn’t going to be anything like your sister. She’s going to be raised in the church. And I’m going to teach her to be respectful.

“Okay, so what are you trying to say? Do you think it’s my fault my sister is the way she is?” I asked defensively. I didn’t know if his statement was the reason I was pissed off, or if my hormones were off balance. Either way, I gave him a look like I was expecting an answer. And it better be the right one.

“All I’m saying is our daughter will be raised differently from the way we were brought up. My mother was a single parent and she raised me the best way she knew how. I just want Kay- Kay to have better than I did. That means being in a two parent household. And putting the Lord first at all times.” He stated.

I sat in silence for a few minutes before I spoke. “So you want me to start going to church?” I asked.

“Yes I do. But it ultimately has to be your choice.
