Chapter 8: Xian & the Central Regions

Central China is a treasure trove of history, the place where Chinese civilization was born and where it continues to be defined. From the Terracotta Warriors to the cute streets of Pingyao, this chapter covers some of the country's most unusual and sublime attractions. However, the smog from coal mining and factories burns through the air, giving the region a somewhat ugly facade. There's little nature to find here and most names on the map are little more than mushrooming industrial towns. But nobody comes here for nature. They come here for ancient China in its unadulterated glory; temples, towns, ancient capitals, and the remains of forgotten dynasties. There more historical sites here than anywhere else in the country, something which makes it hard to keep off any itinerary.

This chapter covers the China regions of Shanxi, Shaanxi, Hubei, and Hunan.
