Chapter 20

“WHAT EXACTLY DO YOU want to do?”

Meg and I had made it to the amphitheater, but I walked the entire way there in a daze. I had known the headmaster wanted to start a war with Hades, I had even known that he was being framed. Now, it seemed extremely likely the headmaster was the one doing the framing.

There wasn’t a lot of proof. She hadn’t actually said that she had done it, but the fact that she was telling a teacher to seduce and manipulate students so that she could start a war made it seem like nothing was beyond her.

“I’m not sure,” I answered. I was still staring at my scrambled eggs, pushing them around my plate with a fork. I knew I should eat, but the turmoil in my mind was so devastating I couldn’t bother with something so mundane as food.

“Wow, you two look ecstatic about something.”

I looked up as Hannah took her seat between Meg and me. Meg forced a smile, but it was clear Hannah wasn’t buying it.

“Okay, what’d I miss?”

“Lexi got down and dirty with Raze and Adrian last night,” Meg said, without her usual flair.

I knew she was saying the first thing that came to mind, trying to deflect from the actual problem. Or, maybe Meg was more focused on that than the oncoming war. With her it was hard to tell.

Hannah grimaced and turned her head to me. I tried to give an embarrassed smile, but I immediately doubted that I had convinced Hannah.

“Meg is a terrible liar, so I completely believe that happened, and I’m a little sad for you,” Hannah told me in a stern voice. “Now, what’s the actual problem?”

“What do you mean?” I asked.

“If that was the only thing that happened, she’d be planning a party right now,” Hannah answered, nodding toward Meg.

“I considered it,” Meg admitted with a smile. She was looking down at her bowl of fruit like she was embarrassed, but I believed that, somehow, that was what she would like to be doing.

I sighed and shook my head. “Listen, the stuff with Raze and Adrian did happen, but—”

“What happened with Raze, exactly?”

I jumped a little. There hadn’t been anyone near our table a second ago, now Sam was standing there, arms crossed over her chest, glaring down at me with absolute fury in her eyes.

Was this girl following me? How did she always manage to turn up any time it was inconvenient for me?

“I thought you said I could do what I wanted?” I snapped back.

It did make me feel a little guilty. Sam was engaged to Raze, I should never have done anything with him. The only justification I could think of was that she had said it was fine.

“You were stupid enough to believe her?”

I jumped again. Sam’s friend, Jade, was sitting beside me, leaning in close to my ear. The way she spoke made it seem like she was eager for a fight between Sam and me.

“Silly Princess,” Jade laughed as she leaned back against the table.
