Please note that it took several months to find the root of Angelique’s problems. This is not an uncommon scenario; indeed, it is a typical, rather than an idealized, picture of what often happens to children like Angelique in a public school system. The delay between the initial referral and the time treatment begins is frustrating. The bureaucracy and legal requirements make much of this unavoidable. Sometimes supplementing a public school program with a private evaluation helps move the process faster. You can also help by letting your child’s teacher know whether completing homework or studying requires extraordinary amounts of your child’s time and energy or whether your child consistently resists doing the assignments unless you sit and help with each question. Children sometimes seem to cope well in the classroom but fall apart at home. Good communication between home and school can get the process moving more quickly and bring about solutions and strategies to allow your child to succeed and enjoy school.
