The District of Columbia was a steel screw-propeller passenger ship built in 1925. On the morning of October 31, 1948, having called at Old Point Comfort, Virginia, from Washington, DC, she headed across Hampton Roads on the last lap to Norfolk. But in doing so, she encountered fog. Nearby was the tanker Georgia. Both ships used their bells, but the fog and a strong flood tide distorted the sound, and the two ships collided. The District of Columbia was run aground on Hampton Bar to avoid sinking. While most passengers were awake and having breakfast, sadly one woman in her berth was killed and three others injured.
