The First Day of School

Fiona, Finley, and Daisy stood on the sidewalk outside the school. “I want you to meet the Little Rock Nine,” Daisy said. “This is Minnijean, Elizabeth, Ernest , Thelma, Melba, Gloria, Terrence, Jefferson, and Carlotta.”

Fiona and Finley waved and smiled. “Hello!”

“Hello.” The members of the Little Rock Nine grinned back at Fiona and Finley.

“Why are you starting school at the end of September?” Finley asked.

“We’ve tried to go to Little Rock High School twice already,” Thelma said.
