David opened the door to find Jeff, Kara, Nate, Morgan, and Kara’s former New York roommate Dawn Ramsey standing on the front steps. The two men carried large crates filled with cans of beer. “Y’all know I always have beer,” he said, opening the door wider. He lowered his head and kissed Kara and Morgan. Reaching for Dawn’s hand, he kissed the back of it. “Welcome back to the Lowcountry.”
The petite natural blonde with a Peter Pan haircut, sky-blue eyes, and a peaches-and-cream complexion blushed attractively. “Thank you.”
Jeff shouldered his way past his cousin. “Now, you know you can never have too much brew when watching basketball or baseball.”
Nate, renowned throughout the Lowcountry as a master carpenter, nodded. “No lie, bro. And you know we like hanging out at your spot because right now you’re the only one with a real man cave.”
“Right now it’s not looking manly because Devon decorated it with candles and flowers.”
Kara and Morgan shared a look. “Devon’s here?”
David stared at the women. “Yeah. In fact, she helped me cook.”
“Break out your dress suit, Nate,” Jeff drawled, “because I smell a wedding coming up. This is the first time since my cousin has started hosting March Madness that he’s allowed any woman in his kitchen.”
“Is there something you’re not telling us, cuz?” Kara asked, questioning her husband’s cousin.
David winked at her. “You’ll find out soon enough, Miss Busybody social worker.”
“Ah, sookie, sookie,” Morgan crooned. “It sounds like someone’s got bitten by the love bug.”
David motioned with his head. “Y’all go in the back, because I know Mo is ready to get her eat on,” he teased.
Morgan rolled her head on her neck while cutting her eyes at him. “If you think you’re insulting me about eating so much, then you’ve got another thing coming. I ain’t shy when it comes to feeding my face because this baby eats nonstop.” She rubbed her belly for emphasis.
Nate let his wife precede him as they followed David to the rear of the historic house. “I told Mo if she doesn’t stop eating we’ll be bankrupt before the end of the year.”
“Quit lying, Nathaniel Shaw,” the architect threw over her shoulder.
“Uh-oh!” David and Jeff crooned in unison.
“Now you know she’s pissed if she calls you by your government name,” David teased. He always enjoyed the good-natured teasing between the two couples. That was something he’d never experienced with Petra because in spite of her partying lifestyle she was always very uptight with him.
He took the crates of beer, storing them in the pantry, then joined his guests. Kara introduced Dawn to Devon before she and Morgan greeted Devon with hugs and air-kisses. It was obvious they’d accepted her as a friend.
Morgan held a hand to her throat. “Now, this is what I’m talking about. I like the flowers and the candles.”
Jeff frowned. “It looks sissified.”
“Sissified or not,” David said, “I happen to like it.”
“You taking up for your woman?” Nate teased.
“You’re damn skippy, bro,” David retorted. “Don’t you take up for Mo?”
Kara held up her hand.
