Chapter 11

Roman

“And?” Zoe asked when Roman returned to her office.

Jordan was on his way out, and he winked at him with a sly grin. Roman was confused by it, but his conversation had not been pleasant, and there was a headache starting at the base of his skull.

“Well, I don’t think they used an agency. But both of my parents were very shifty about the whole thing.”

Zoe must have sensed his distress because she said, “Shifters being shifty, huh?”

He tried to smile at the joke, but he knew he failed at the sentiment.

“Wanna talk about it?”

“Not really,” he grumbled. “Maybe I should just go. See them. Talk to them in person.”

“Would that help?” she asked.

“Probably not. Mom will start to cry, and as soon as she does, Dad will get angry. Then there will be no talking about anything. Things will go from bad to worse in no time at all.”

“Okay, so then let’s talk it out. What did you say? How did they respond?”

“My mom answered. I asked her how she heard that my brothers and I, and then Elisa, were up for adoption. She immediately got defensive and gave the phone over to my father.”

“And? Was it any better with him?”

“Not even a little bit. At least I warned him. I should’ve done that for Mom, too, but I was careless.”

“You’re a lot of things, Roman. But no one could ever accuse you of being careless.”

“I told him that I would be asking some strange and uncomfortable questions but that it was for the benefit of the family. He agreed, but when I asked how they knew how to find us, he snapped at me that I was poking around in things that were better off being left alone.”

“That was it?”

“That was it, yeah. He found a reason to end the call.” Roman licked his lips as he ran his fingers through his hair a few times.

“I’m sorry they’re not forthcoming with the information you need.”

“My parents are open and honest about everything. So that they are secretive about this ...” he shook his head. “It scares me. What if there was something shady about how we were adopted?”

“You can’t think that. You can’t go there. We have no answers yet. And please don’t be mad when I ask this, okay?”

He straightened his back, getting ready. “That’s never a good way to start a thought, darling.”

“I know, but you said you regretted not doing it with your mom earlier, so I’m just taking a page out of your book.”

“Go on.”

“If you told your parents about the blackmailing, would they not tell you everything you need to know?”

“I don’t know. I promised Elisa I wouldn’t say anything. And with the way my parents are reacting over this, I don’t think they would even tell me the truth.”

“Should you give them a chance?”

“I fear they would lie. And honestly, I don’t know if I can handle that. Let’s keep doing things your way for now. I ..." he huffed out a breath.
