Izzy

Izzy folded her apron and put it in her bag.

She studied her face in the mirror of Edible Complex’s powder room.

Even in the dim light, she could see the joy in her own eyes.

She had made a lot of people happy today with her ice cream.

And now she was going to see the man she loved.

She ran a comb through her hair and smoothed a little Chapstick on her lips.

It was interesting to be dating someone who had known her all her life. He was seeing her inside and out - she wasn’t wrapped up in deciding on makeup or hairstyles for him. He had seen her in all her phases already - for better and for worse.

It was a relief to just be herself.

Herself, only happier - that’s what she was.

And she was more curious too. The more she thought about Chase and what he had revealed to her, the more curious she became.

She wasn’t sure if it was rude to ask a person who could shift into a wolf more about their biology and heritage. But there was so much about him she wanted to know.

She headed back out and there he was - framed in the glass door of Edible Complex.

No matter how many times she saw him, he was always taller and sexier than she remembered.

He smiled at her and she felt desire twist in her stomach.

“Hey, Izzy,” he said, his deep voice low, reminding her of the way he spoke in the bedroom.

“Hi, Chase,” she said, feeling herself blush.

“Are you ready?” he asked.

She nodded and he held open the door.

Izzy stepped out into the brilliant afternoon sunshine.

“It’s beautiful out, isn’t it?” Chase asked. “Want to take a walk before we sit down?”

“Yes,” Izzy said gratefully. “That sounds amazing.”

“Let’s go to the campus,” Chase offered.

She nodded and they crossed the street, using the train overpass to reach the campus side of town.

They cut past the Inn to a path through the woods.

“Have you been to the amphitheater lately?” Chase asked her.

“Not in a long time,” Izzy admitted.

“We used to play down here,” Chase remembered.

“We were lucky kids to have the college woods to play in,” Izzy agreed.

Chase smiled a funny smile.

“What?” she asked.

“You know my secret,” he said thoughtfully. “I was thinking that I’m a lucky adult to have the woods to play in.”

She blinked at him, then realized what he was saying.

“You mean, when you’re…”

“Yes,” he said, chuckling.

“Is it okay for me to ask you about that?” She bit her lip, hoping she wasn’t about to offend him.

He stopped walking and turned to her, placing a hand on her shoulder.

“Izzy, you can ask me about anything you want,” he said with a solemn gaze. “Anything at all.”

“Thank you,” she said, hypnotized by his beautiful dark eyes.

“Was there something you wanted to know?” he reminded her.

“Yes, yes, of course,” she said. “I want to ask you about a lot of things, actually.”

He let go of her shoulder and they continued their walk.

“Shoot,” he said.

“Okay, how long have you been able to do that?” she asked.
