Chapter 25

We tramped down the dark, cold street, ignoring everyone else as if they were ghosts. Or we were. I wasn’t sure.

“I’m so tired of nearly dying,” I muttered.

Mal spun me to face him and placed his hands on my shoulders. “You won’t die, Winter. I won’t allow it.”

I gave him a conciliatory smile, deciding not to point out that he had a lot of motivation, between the vow he’d made and the soul tether, but it felt too barbed for the moment, so I just curled forward onto his shoulder and let him hold me. I could feel he had every intention of keeping me safe, and it was nice to be the center of that kind of devotion.

Finch was that for me once, but we hadn’t even had a chance to let things develop between us. He got snuffed out just as I started to hope for a future.

“We've got what we needed, love. Let’s get some rest and head back to Lumina tomorrow.”

I let a long, slow breath of crisp air refresh me and gave him a resolute nod, turning to walk on. A pressure wrapped around the back of my neck, and when I glanced over, I realized he’d put his arm around me. His hand at the nape of my neck wasn’t something I’d ever longed for, but it sure felt safe as we walked down the street together. If it were anyone else, I’d feel controlled, but not with him. I leaned closer and his hand slid down my back and around my hip, pulling me flush against him. We didn’t speak, but the gratitude I felt flushed through, and when an overwhelmingly protective warmth came flooding back, we both knew it was a communication all its own. I felt surprise and awe and he responded with a strange, pleasant hunger.

We both slipped our shoes off when we got inside, and Mal disappeared behind the bathroom door as I slumped into a chair, letting as much anxiety seep out as I could. We were safe behind closed doors now—for tonight at least—and I could rest.

He came out shirtless, his face washed, his hair wet and slicked back. I wasn’t one to gawk but he was practically perfect in every way, with his six-pack and the V lines leading to his package and... Inevitably, that thought led to the memory of him rubbing himself against me last night and how big and delicious it felt.

He grinned as he swaggered up to me, stopping inches away before I’d even noticed. “Hungry?”

I swallowed. “Huh? Um, no. No thanks.” I adjusted my position, sitting taller.

But I could feel the burning between us, and I couldn’t lie to myself–he was delicious. Lowering to his knees, he slid his hands down the backs of my calves. “Relax, love. Sit back.”

I settled back again but my throat was dry and my stomach a hard lump. Or was it a swirling mess of confusion? I tried to breathe it away.

He pulled one of my feet onto his lap, gently rubbing over the top and bottom with his hands flattened.
