Fear Is Not from God

Timothy was a very young man who lived in a time when Christians were being persecuted. He was the apostle Paul’s spiritual son and had been ordained for the Gospel ministry by the elders, but fear was attacking him. He was concerned that he was too young for ministry, and that he would be persecuted for his belief in Jesus. Paul told him to stir up his faith, to fan the flame and not let the fire that was once in him go out. The longer we allow fearful thoughts, the more tightly they grip us. If we talk about our fears, we fan the flame of fear. But if we talk about God’s goodness, His faithfulness to us in the past, and the privilege of living by faith, we fan the flame of our faith and it stays alive and powerful. We don’t automatically stay strong in faith, and there are times when we must stir ourselves up in faith and remind ourselves that we don’t have to live in fear.

I am sure Timothy was doing too much negative thinking and had forgotten the rich heritage of faith he had received from his grandmother and mother, so Paul reminded him (see 2 Timothy 1:1–6). Sometimes we need someone to interrupt our negative talk and help us get back on track, and sometimes we need to lovingly remind others of the power of their words. We cannot take it upon ourselves to correct the mistakes of others all the time, but we can and should be led by the Holy Spirit to speak a word in due season to those who have an open heart, as Paul did to Timothy.
