7. Set a Target Date

When do you want to finish this by? “I want to quit smoking by the Christmas,” or “I want to practice healthy thinking consistently within thirty days.” Set a due date. If you don’t set a target date for your goal to be completed by, there’s nothing saying how diligently you have to work toward your goal. After all, there’s no finish line.

Because you’re only changing one habit at a time, a reasonable time frame for changing that habit is one month. Now, I’m not saying you’re going to completely and wholly overcome every possible urge that might pop up in one month, but I’m saying you can change that hand to mouth habit of emotional eating out for a good automatic habit in one month.

Addictions, like smoking and drinking, may take more time. You may need to set a sixty- or ninety-day target date for challenging habits like these.
