Chapter 33 - Chanelle

I saw Rick sitting in his truck as I walked towards the church, and my heart skipped a beat. For a brief moment, I contemplated waiting for Rick so we could walk in together. But then I remembered how furious and hurt I was, and entered the building alone. I wanted our relationship to work but Rick was going to have to be completely honest with me and I wasn't sure if he’d be able to do it. I had no idea what had happened to us over the past 72 hours, but our relationship was deteriorating right before my own eyes. I hoped and prayed that Pastor Sharpe would be able to help us.

I walked down the long corridor to her office and saw Miss Maggie sitting at the receptionist’s desk. “Hi, Miss Maggie, is Pastor in? Rick and I have a 6:00 p.m. appointment,” I said, smiling at the elderly woman.

“Why, hello Sister Chanelle. Yes, she is and she’s expecting you. Where’s that handsome young fella of yours?”

“If you’re talking about me, I’m right here,” Rick answered, walking up behind me and kissing me on my cheek. As much as I didn’t want to, I felt my body respond to his touch. “Hey, Babe,” he said to me.

“Hi.”

“Why don’t you both have a seat and I’ll tell Pastor you’re here.”

“Thank you, Miss Maggie,” I said to her before Rick and I sat in the chairs in the waiting area. We were so awkward with each other that it would have been comical if it weren’t so painful.

He said, “I called you today.”

“I know.”

“Why didn’t you call me back?”

“I didn’t have anything to say.”

“Chanelle, we have to talk. I need you to tell me what’s bothering you,” he pressed me.

You know what’s bothering me, and this innocent act is not working. How about you tell me why you went to Twyla’s yesterday? Huh? Let’s start there, if you really want to talk. But what I said was, “I’m fine.”

“Chanelle, we both know you’re not fine. Please tell me what’s wrong.”

Before I had a chance to tell him I was okay again, Miss Maggie told us Pastor Sharpe was ready. As we walked into her spacious office, she greeted us at the door. “Rick and Chanelle! Congratulations, you two!!” She pulled us into her and embraced us in a motherly hug.

“Thank you, Pastor,” we said simultaneously.

“Sit down, sit down,” she motioned for us to take a seat on her couch and she sat in her big overstuffed chair in front of it.

I sat on one end of the couch and Rick sat so close to me I could feel the electricity flow between our bodies. As much as I wanted to scoot away from him, I felt like a magnet was keeping us connected, and I couldn’t move.

She began our session with, “So tell me, have you set a date?”

I responded, “Yes, July 23rd in Aruba.”

“Oooh, that sounds wonderful.”

Rick said, “Pastor, it would feel funny if a stranger married us, so we’d like to offer you and Reverend Sharpe a vacation to Aruba.
