Pause for Emphasis and to Stop Saying “Uh” and “Um”

Pauses are another powerful speaking tool. A short pause may seem like a long time to you, but it gives listeners a chance to digest information and is much appreciated. A carefully placed pause shines a spotlight on the words that follow it. Pause between paragraphs. Pause between sentences. Pause when you want people to pay full attention to what you are about to say. The other place that pausing is important is when you are changing topics. Give the listener a quick mental break before you take their attention in a new direction.

If you are in a forum where you have to turn your back to your audience to change your slides, keep in mind that it is far better to pause and wait until you are facing your viewers before you start speaking again. That way your voice doesn’t get muffled.

Pausing is also a great antidote for those of us who find we say “um” or “uh” too much or fill silence with other nonwords. Learning to pause to collect your thoughts will make the need for nonwords disappear. You can see that pausing has many benefits. Give it a try!
