Chapter Seven

It took three days before the snow ceased falling, and another two before anything was remotely passable. Even now, staring out the window at the world of white he could easily step out onto from here, he clearly had a difficult time ahead of him.

Footsteps padded across the floor behind him, and then Odilia's head was resting on his shoulder, hair brushing his cheek as she sighed. "Sun's not even really up yet, and you're ready to go. Always our Knight of Dusk and Dawn."

"Your what?" Leonine asked with a laugh, dislodging her as he turned.

Odilia smiled. "That's what we call you: our Knight of Dusk and Dawn. Champion, maybe, given how often you've saved us now. Come to us after sunset and leave with the sunrise. We almost never get to see you during the daylight. Maybe now that will change."

"I hope so," Leonine said, covering her hand as she rested it against his cheek. "I'd like to see you both more, now that I'm not just your longest-running bit of entertainment."

Sighing softly, Odilia said, "You never were, right from the start. Wish we'd handled it better."

"You handled it just fine last night."

"Oh, shut up," Odilia said, playfully smacking his cheek before leaning in to kiss him. When they eventually drew apart, she said, "I wish you'd wait another day or two, but I can tell from your posture that you won't."

"I'm not going to fail my first mission," Leonine said. "I can't."

"You won't," Everard said from the bed as he slowly untangled himself from the sheets and sat on the edge of the bed. He yawned hard enough that Leonine's jaw hurt watching, and then added, "Anyway, if you're this stuck while snug and safe and snug in the city, think how hard a time they've had out there in the wilderness. They'll be lucky if they're still alive."

"I guess I'll find out," Leonine said, and reluctantly nudged Odilia back so he could finish packing.

"Let us come with you," Odilia said. "In weather like this, better to be in a group."

Leonine shot her a look. "Absolutely not. I am not dragging civilians further into this mess. You've already been hurt twice dealing with bandits and that stupid slumlord. I can't protect the two of you and myself against professional killers."

"We're not completely helpless," Everard said. "We know how to stay out of the way at any rate. Also, without us you'd be dead, so I really do think it's better if we come along for now."

"No, and that's final," Leonine said, shoving the last of his belongings in his saddle bags before he set to getting his armor on. When he was ready, he hefted his bags over his shoulder and turned to the door—and drew up short to see it was blocked by his lovers, their faces set. "I said no."

"We're your lovers, not your employers," Odilia said. "We don't have to obey you. Anyway, there's nothing you can do if we just happen to be traveling the same direction as you.
