The house was quiet. Junior was still getting used to that. He always wanted peace and silence, but as of late, he felt the emptiness of it now. It was this way almost every day when he returned from work. Since he introduced Evie to the Wilsons a few months ago, Eve, Sadie, and Theo spent most of their days at the Wilson farm now.

Junior could admit to himself that he missed having them here to greet him when he got home from work, but he’d never tell them. He missed the smile on Sadie’s face when he opened the front door, always waiting for sweet treats he brought her. Junior missed his playtime with Theo when he cared for the babe so the girls could finish dinner. Most of all, he missed seeing Evie’s beauty when he walked through the door after a hard day’s work.

What he didn’t miss was the anxious look on her lovely face just after he stepped in from outside. He knew the reason for her fear, and everything in him wanted to abolish, kill and bury it in an empty field. She, like each of them, knew that Cefus wasn’t going to stay away for too long. Just like Evie, Junior honestly feared the man’s return.

Today Junior fought his loneliness away and trudged to the kitchen. He washed his hands then pulled the seasoned beef loaf that he prepared the night before and placed it in the oven. Then he did what he did four times each day. He lifted the handle of the newly installed phone that the social worker required them to have, and he dialed the Wilson’s phone.

When Mrs. Wilson picked up, she greeted him without his having to talk. “Hello, Junior,” she said. He could tell she was smiling.

“Hello, Mrs. W. Can I talk with Eve please?”

“She’s right here, one moment.”

Junior heard the sound of Mrs. Wilson putting the phone receiver down then the sound of her children, Fran, and Paul, playing with Theo. It seemed that both children adored his son…brother. Theo is my brother, he reminded himself for the hundredth time.

“Hello.”

As always, Junior’s heart skipped a beat with such force he usually had to rub his chest. The sound of Evie’s voice was something he would always treasure. It was what got him through most days. It was what powered him. It was also what soothed him when he needed to make sure that she didn’t leave him. That she realized that she didn’t need him and ran for her freedom.

Her voice was his anchor because unbeknownst to Eve, Junior decided that she was his, and he was keeping her.

“Everything alright?” he asked. It was the question he always asked.

“Yes,” Eve’s voice was lit with excitement. “I’ve finished the dress! Mrs. Wilson, ah…Mabel and Shirley helped me make my first homemade apple pie today. It smells wonderful,” she sang. “Oh, and Sadie is doing so well with her swimming lessons. You should be so proud of her!”

He was. Sadie had a fear of water for as long as he could remember and rarely did she go to the Hole.
