CHAPTER FORTY

Hudson

The further Brad and I traveled along the riverbank, the more violent the water became as it rushed past us, and the terrain got harder to traverse over. The snow made the rocks slick, and there was no other route. Judging by the river’s flow, the current would have pulled Elyanna much farther and faster. I had to find the river’s edge.

Brad tapped my shoulder and then pulled out a notepad.

- We need to head back. Storm’s coming.

I shook my head.

- Need more people and off-road vehicles. Easier to find her in daylight.

We’d been hiking for hours. It had been nearly dawn when we started, but we kept going when the sun was up, and now the sun was beginning to set. Soon it would be pitch dark, and the light dusting of snow would become a steady downpour of powdery stuff.

He was right. My heart hurt being away from El and not knowing if she was okay. But I wouldn’t be doing her any favors if I froze to death before I could find her.

We back tracked to the prison and arrived just as snow began to blanket the ground.

I slammed the door open and bounded up the flight of stairs, looking for Xavi.

He took one look at me, and his face dropped.

“The prison is secure. I’ve secured all hostages in one cell. Most died in the initial scuffle. There are only twenty left out of sixty. Some were overzealous in their ideals.” He shrugged. “And Ax had to deploy the Omega protocol at Gator.”

I stopped in my tracks. Fuck. That meant we had dissenters who compromised had our way of life.

“Is your sister and family okay?” I asked.

“Yeah, she’s good, as well as the children. Doc, the nurses, and Chef are good, too. The rest are good soldiers.”

“I’m glad. But fuck. We should bring them here.” I scratched my head.

“Ax is thinking the same thing. They can start moving things within twenty-four hours.” Xavi led me back to the captain’s office.

“How’s the comms system here?”

“Better than what we had. So are all the operating systems. With Becks’s gift, we’ll easily be able to sustain ourselves.”

I nodded, then radioed Ax.

- Well done. Being the process to move everyone here.

I said into the radio when Axel answered. We didn’t want to lose Gator, but I trusted his judgment. The Omega protocol would keep our people safe for a time, but if the community was compromised, we had to let it go.

- El?

- Nothing. It’s beginning to snow.

- I haven’t received a vision. That tells me she’s fine. If you can spare the time, head here in the morning and we’ll resume our search after the storm passes.

- We’ll be there.

I set the radio on the captain’s and scrubbed a hand down my face. What a fucking shit show. The captain had been moved to a cell, so I made myself at home in his quarters and passed out.

A few hours later, I roused the men, leaving Troy and Brad in charge while Xavi and I drove a truck to Gator.
