Chapter Six

By breakfast the next morning Travis hadn’t been able to come up with anything more than a few choice curse words and a headache that didn’t seem to want to quit. And still Hannah looked miserable as she sat there eating her sugary cereal and pretending to be interested in an orange. Liam wasn’t much better as he frowned down at his own piece of toast. Even the dogs whined quietly under the table, as if they could feel how unhappy everyone in their house was.

“I vote we go to a movie,” Hannah offered, sounding diplomatic as her slippers brushed over the rich wood in their little breakfast nook.

Liam looked up at him and appeared to be about to respond when Travis shook his head. Seemingly defeated, he dropped his head again.

“Or I want to go see Christopher,” Hannah continued.

“Why?” Travis asked, confused as to where that came from.

She crossed her arms over her chest and stubbornly looked up at him. “Because he needs to know about the boy with the brown fur.”

His brows rising, Travis simply stared at his daughter.

“Um. Why him?” Liam asked.

“Because he can search for him. Put out an Amber Call for him.” She nodded as if that made perfect sense.

Liam sighed. “It’s an Amber Alert, honey, and that’s not quite how they work.”

“Why not?”

Liam frowned. “Because we don’t know if he’s actually missing. And those are only for missing children. Plus he’s not even in the US,” he tried to explain.

She looked slightly defeated but not nearly enough to give up her chase. “Christopher said if I have anything that’s police-like I should go to him. The boy with brown fur was kidnapped. I know it. And so I have to see him.”

“You don’t know that about him,” Travis said gently, pulling her attention away from Liam.

Hannah uncrossed her arms and leaned forward on the table. “I have an idea. I see Christopher, then I go to school. No Christopher, no school.”

Travis sighed and as much as he didn’t want to start making deals with his daughter, he slowly nodded, realizing that she wasn’t going to let this little boy go anytime soon. “Alright. But after you talk to him you are going straight to school. No more excuses. Deal?”

Any traces of unhappiness quickly fled her face as she took off running upstairs to get ready. When he turned back to Liam he found him on his phone. “Who’re you calling?” he asked as he started to clear the dishes.

“Christopher—I want him coming here. There’s no way I’m letting Hannah go to a police station. There’s criminals there,” Liam said sternly.

Travis smirked, instantly reminded of why he loved this protective man. He chuckled as he moved past Liam and put the dishes into the dishwasher.

“They’re on their way here,” Liam said, putting his phone away. “I actually caught them at a good time, since they were driving to the precinct.”

Travis nodded and washed his hands. “Thanks for calling them. That way we can help her with one thing at least.
