The Medicinal Cologne

Medicinal colognes have been around since at least the seventeenth century and are recorded in many herbal and medical texts. One of the more popular ones of the eighteenth century, 4711, was developed in Cologne, Germany, by Wilhelm Muelhens. This cologne is still sold today, albeit a somewhat different composition than the original recipe, as many colognes were intended in that time period for both external and internal use.

This CBDA-infused, whole-plant medicinal cologne is true to its roots; colognes developed hundreds of years ago were meant to refresh, soothe, and relieve both internally and externally. Part medicinal tincture, part aromatherapeutics—see if you don’t fall in love with these as an everyday remedy.

These are rich in alcohol—no more than 2 ml is suggested for internal use. May be used generously as a body splash or on a cool wet cloth for relief from heat. They are great to add to water for a quick cleanup of face, neck, hands, and arms after outdoor activities too. I personally love to splash this cologne for immediate relief of hot flashes!

Plants with cooling properties are suggested for this recipe. Cool frankincense resin like frankincense sacra, scented geranium leaves, white tea, mint, rose petals, lavender flowers, lemon thyme, lemon balm, and basil, are among my favorites and are all edible. If you opt to use citrus peels or other potentially phototoxic herbs, avoid the sun after using this cologne externally.

1 handful (100g) or a little more fresh or dried fragrant herbs and flowers.

5g–10g dried and cured CBDA-rich cannabis flowers (not decarboxylated)

1¼ cup (300ml) 150-proof or higher culinary-grade alcohol

¼ cup (60ml) distilled water (I like to use distilled culinary rose or orange flower water, but plain distilled water is fine)

Makes: 12oz (360ml) cologne

1. In a large amber glass canning jar with a new lid, pack the herbs and CBD-rich cannabis flowers tightly. Leave at least 3 inches (7.5cm) at the top of the jar, but don’t leave too much more than that—you will want to pack a generous amount of herbs into the jar for very fragrant cologne!

2. Pour the alcohol over the herbs until it is approximately 1 inch (2.5cm) above the herbs in the jar. With all of the herbs and alcohol in the jar, there should now be about a 2-inch (5cm) space left at the top of the jar.

3. Affix the lid tightly. Allow the jar to sit in a dark but warm area like the corner of the kitchen. Shake the jar at least 2 times a week for about 3 weeks. You can mature the jar even up to 6 weeks before you decant it.

4. Strain the liquid through a cheesecloth into a glass bowl, squeezing out as much liquid from the herbs as you can. Add the plain distilled water, or culinary rose or orange flower water for even more fragrance, and stir.

5. Prepare the final glass bottle that you will store your cologne in. Using a funnel, pour the liquid into the bottle and cap. Use within 6 months for best results.
