Back in Corralejo, Alice remained ensconced in her room. She lay motionless on her back on her bed, just staring at the cracks in the ceiling. It might have been sunny outside, but the black cloud that had descended upon her was not going away. Darkness had seeped into every corner of her soul, extinguishing all hope that she was ever going to get out of this.

What else could she do? She had already concluded that there was no way out. All she could do was just live every day in the knowledge that certain death awaited. She would have to endure this misery time and time again.

She felt hungry and thirsty but couldn’t motivate herself to go out and get anything to eat and certainly wasn’t going to add to her misery by drinking any more of the filthy coffee in the kitchen. What was the point in eating and drinking anyway? Sustaining her body was another pointless activity.

She was shaken out of her miserable musings by a banging on the door and the sound of the rep’s voice.

“Alice, are you in there? You didn’t come to the welcome meeting!”

“Go away,” mouthed Alice, quietly to herself, willing the irritating Natalie to leave her in peace. She resisted the temptation to shout out, in the hope that she would assume there was nobody there and give up.

“You shouldn’t be hiding away in there all day, you know,” she called. “That won’t do you any good. You’re supposed to be on holiday. Come on, I know you’re in there!”

It was the second time today she had heard this phrase, but she hadn’t minded when it had come from Henry. This was different. What was it with this woman? Why wouldn’t she just leave her alone? And how did she know Alice was there? She hadn’t set foot out of the bedroom since Henry had left.

“I’ll just leave these here, then, shall I?” asked Natalie, after a lengthy pause.

“Whatever,” muttered Alice, again quietly. Mercifully, after that she heard no more. Perhaps Natalie had concluded she wasn’t there after all.

Even though the curtains were closed, it was getting noticeably hotter in the room. Today did seem to be more of a scorcher than usual, which was odd. If it was the same day she had experienced several times before then the temperature ought to be the same.

Eventually she fell asleep, but her dreams were haunted by visions of dozens of different deaths. She recalled the horrors she had already experienced when she had been drowned, burned, and eaten alive. But it didn’t end there.

Soon she was dreaming of more ways she might die, of being shot, blown up, and murdered, in a myriad of different ways. And there was one thing that was common to them all. Every time she died, she could see Natalie laughing and revelling in her death.

“This is what happens when you don’t come to my welcome meeting,” she said, mocking her.
