The streets are dead silent, with all the Rippers and kids shut in their homes. That’s why when I hear the voices, they carry clear on the air. I’m walking through the alley next to the old pool, about to reach the main street and get on my bike, when the words float around the corner and stop me in my tracks.

“At least she won’t catch it tonight,” a woman’s voice says.

“Nice work,” a man replies. “And we can use these things ourselves.”

“Or sell them?” suggests the woman. “Probably get a decent price for a dozen motion sensors. Sherman will have plans for them, anyway, I’m sure. Come on, let’s get to the school. Don’t want to be late. You know how he hates that.”

Their voices grow fainter as they move on down the street. My mind is racing.

Arty was right. Sabotage. That’s what they were doing while our attention was on the broken camera, before the Revenant arrived. But it sounds like more than just sour grapes. Why on earth would they want to stop the Revenant being caught?

Only one way to find out.

Maybe I can do something helpful tonight, after all.
